The Town of Port Hedland Council has voted to permanently relocate the South Hedland Square taxi rank during the Ordinary Council Meeting held on the Wednesday 22 November.

The decision was made following a trial relocation to Wise Terrace, south of McLarty Boulevarde, following ongoing issues including loitering and antisocial behaviours surrounding the South Hedland Square location.

It was agreed by all stakeholders that an improvement in behaviour in the area was evident during the trial.

“We have consulted with stakeholders including the police, taxi companies, and Charter Hall, and all have agreed that the taxi rank location should be permanently changed,” said Mayor of Port Hedland Camilo Blanco.

“South Hedland Police Station have reported a significant reduction in call out jobs to this specific area since the trial commenced in April.”

“Additionally, the Town Square has been utilised more frequently by community services within the allocated green space, further demonstrating that the relocation has had a positive impact on community participation in this public space.”

While the taxi companies fully support the permanent relocation of the taxi rank, they have requested that more shade be installed at the new location for drivers. Council has agreed to consider shade options in the 2018/19 budget.
