Repairs to Local Roads Underway

A multimillion-dollar road works program has commenced in the Port Hedland region this month, to repair roads damaged by severe weather events in 2017.

Funding for the works was awarded as a result of the weather events being declared a natural disaster by the State Government’s Western Australia Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (WANDRRA).

Port Hedland Mayor Camilo Blanco said that following 12 months of assessment, he is looking forward to seeing the roads brought back up to standard.

“Last year’s storm resulted in extensive damage to the region’s road network, and Town of Port Hedland staff have been working to identify the full scale of work required,” Mayor Blanco explained.

“Roads are the economic corridor for our mining, agricultural and tourism industries. Improving the condition of roads as well as the safety and accessibility for residents in our region is a high priority for council."

The $2.1 million project has been funded by WANDRRA, the Town of Port Hedland’s Unsealed Road Renewal Program and the Pilbara Regional Road Group.

Works will be carried out on Pippingarra, Yandeyarra, Shoata, Twelve Mile Creek and Madigan Roads over the next month. For updates, please see the Town of Port Hedland Facebook page.
