Rating Strategy Received Ministerial Approval

Published on Tuesday, 28 August 2018 at 2:06:20 PM

The Town of Port Hedland’s 2018/19 Rating Strategy has been approved by the Minister for Local Government, Heritage, Culture and the Arts.

This Strategy will result in approximately 91% of residential ratepayers receiving a rates reduction, and a more equal distribution of how the rates yield is collected.

“This rating statement results in over 4000 residential rate payers receiving a reduction in their rates, reflecting community concerns around decreasing property values,” said Port Hedland Mayor Camilo Blanco.

“To ensure equity for all rate payers, we have applied a uniform rate in the dollar across residential, industrial and commercial categories: this means that property value will determine the total rates bill.

“A uniform rate improves transparency, administrative efficiency and reduces compliance costs for both the Council and all rate payers.

“I’m pleased the Minister has approved this strategy, one which strikes the right balance for all ratepayers and provides financial stability for the Town.”

As the rating strategy has now been approved, the Special Council Meeting to adopt the 2018/19 Town of Port of Hedland Budget can proceed and will be held at 5:30pm on 6 September in Council Chambers.

“Council can now move on to passing the budget, which will provide vital funding for the services and infrastructure upgrades our Town needs.”

Rates Notices will be issued to rate payers approximately two weeks after the Special Council Meeting and adoption of the Budget.
