Living Libraries bring Local Stories Alive

Published on Tuesday, 5 June 2018 at 4:46:58 PM

The Town of Port Hedland has wrapped up the first round of Living Library sessions, an initiative designed to engage people with each other’s unique personal experiences.

Thanks to Major Sponsor Roy Hill, sessions were held across various locations from Friday 18 May to Saturday 26 May, with readers hiring living books for 20 minutes to hear their stories.

Living Books are people who often face prejudice or stereotyping in society: representing minorities based on culture, religion, belief, ideology, disability, sexual orientation, gender or appearance.

Mayor Camilo Blanco said the initiative was a wonderful way for the community to come together and increase dialogue and understanding.

“I’d like to thank Roy Hill for making this initiative possible, with several community members taking the time to become a living book or reader.

“In our day to day lives, we may not get the chance to interact with people from different backgrounds or circumstances.

“These sessions allowed people to learn about people from diverse circumstances and understand the challenges others can face in their daily lives.

“I look forward to more sessions being held later this year.”
