Students from local primary schools recently got the opportunity to participate in a series of art workshops with Aboriginal artist Annabella Flatt, working towards creating artworks to decorate the Town of Port Hedland’s newest street sweeper.

After much deliberation two students, Bianca Fernando (age 11) from Port Hedland Primary School and Abigail Rose (age 11) from South Hedland Primary School, had their artworks selected to be displayed on either side of the sweeper.

Port Hedland Mayor Camilo Blanco congratulated the winners and said that the newly dressed sweeper is looking fantastic.

“This competition was a wonderful opportunity to give our local kids a chance to have their very own artwork on display,” Mayor Blanco said.

“I’d like to thank Annabella and all of the students and teachers for making this project so enjoyable for everyone involved.

The sweeper visited the schools of the winning artists last week, giving students the chance to see their paintings on display.

Port Hedland Primary Schools Bianca Fernando said she was very surprised and excited when she won the Street Sweeper Art Competition.

“My painting portrays the beauty of Port Hedland and I hope that people will enjoy it every time it passes by."
