Hedland Living Library launches this May

Published on Friday, 4 May 2018 at 11:13:25 AM

The chance to experience the unique and personal stories of some of our most interesting locals is coming to the Port Hedland community this May.

Living Library kicks off at Welcome to Hedland, from 5pm – 8pm, Friday 18 May at the South Hedland Town Square and continues throughout the week following:

  • Friday 18 May, 6pm-8pm - Welcome to Hedland
  • Monday 21 May, 10am-12pm - South Hedland Senior High School (open to students only)
  • Thursday 24 May, 10:30-11:30am (during story time) - South Hedland Library
  • Thursday 24 May, 5pm-7pm - South Hedland Library
  • Saturday 26 May, 10am-12pm - South Hedland Library

Port Hedland Mayor Camilo Blanco described the initiative as an exciting chance for community members to view life from the perspective of others.

“The Living Library provides a safe environment for our ‘Living Books’ to share their unique stories, encouraging visitors to connect with people they wouldn’t normally have the chance to.

“The Living Books each represent a different minority group based on elements such as culture, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation, gender or appearance.

“This is a rare opportunity to challenge our own perceptions, prejudices and stereotypes of those living in our community.

If you have a story to share, the Town of Port Hedland is currently seeking participants to join the list of Living Books available. Please contact Cara Dixon on 9158 9325 or at cdixon@porthedland.wa.gov.au to find out more or sign up.
