A commemorative event will be held next Sunday, 30 July to mark the 75th Anniversary of the day the town was bombed by the Japanese, killing one person.
The ceremony, to be held at the Port Hedland International Airport at 11.30am, will remember those impacted by the event.
Town of Port Hedland Mayor Camilo Blanco is urging community members to attend the event to pause and remember the day the Second World War came to town.
“On the 30th July 1942 a young soldier named Private Adams was killed when up to 70 bombs were dropped on the local airfield by the Japanese”, he said.
“The ceremony on Sunday will give us a chance to pause and reflect on the loss of Private Adams and also remember the service and sacrifice of all of those who have served our country, and those who continue to serve in current peace operations. The Bombing of our town is an important part of our history and should never be forgotten”.
The service will commence at the Port Hedland International Airport at 11.30 with free short-term parking available. Refreshments and a memorabilia display will follow from 12pm-4pm at the RSL Anzac House, Hedditch St, South Hedland.
