What is National Simultaneous Storytime?

National Simultaneous Storytime is an event held annually by the Library and Information Association (ALIA), seeking to promote literacy through the simultaneous reading of an Australian children's book across hundreds of locations. It is now in its 18th successful year, and last year attracted over 686,324 participants in over 6,129 locations across Australia. Every year since 2001, an Australian novel has been selected to read. Titles have included The Cow Tripped Over the Moon by Tony Wilson and The Magic Hat by Mem Fox. The event also attracts VIP guest readers, such as Chief Scientist of Australia Dr Alan Finkel and Fitness Expert Michelle Bridges.

The facilitation of the National Simultaneous Storytime by ALIA aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, promote the value and fun of books, promote an Australian writer and publisher, promote storytime activities in public libraries and communities around the country, and provide opportunities to involve parents, grandparents, the media and others to participate in and enjoy the occasion.

What is the selected novel for 2018?

The novel which has been selected this year is Hickory Dickory Dash by Tony Wilson, an entertaining Tale about a cat and mouse chase which sees a mother mouse searching for her sons. The synopsis tells of a valiant mother mouse seeking to protect her young under the threat of a cat in hot pursuits. You can read more about the tale here.

How is Hedland Involved?

Port Hedland Libraries are active year round in promoting the message to our young people that strong literacy skills open doors for their future. Both Port and South Hedland Libraries are participating by holding story time sessions at 11am on Wednesday, 23 May. Locals are invited to attend a session, and there will also be craft related activities following the reading of the novel.

In 2018, as well as the Libraries, St Cecilia's Catholic Primary School also participated in National Simultaneous Story time. Port Hedland Mayor, Camilo Blanco, read "Hickory Dickory Dash" to the local school children.
