Port Hedland Vertebrate Pest Management Program (VPMP) is a coordinated program targeted at managing environmental impacts caused by the Red Fox and feral cats. Both species are listed as declared pests under the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007.
The main objectives of the VPMP include:
- Increasing awareness on threats and impacts caused by foxes and feral cats to native fauna and ecosystems.
- Reducing impacts and damage of foxes and feral cats on susceptible native fauna species and the environment by implementing effective controls according to best practices and guidelines.
- Promoting collaboration, information and resource sharing between stakeholders for a holistic approach to broadscale vertebrate pest management across multiple land tenures.
The VPMP is carried out strategically across the Greater Port Hedland region and spans across multiple tenements, including reserves managed by the Town of Port Hedland (ToPH). Due to proximity to residential and built-up areas, controls within areas managed by ToPH are currently limited to trapping only. 1080 ground baiting will be undertaken in areas approved by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), outside of ToPH managed reserves.
Pet owners play an important role in the safety of their pets and the effectiveness of the VPMP.
Trapping will be undertaken from 15- 28 April 2024
- Pretty Pool, 4 Mile Creek and 6 Mile Creek will be target areas
- Cage traps will be deployed for feral cats
- Cages traps and soft jaw foothold traps will be deployed for foxes
- Dogs to be kept on leads and under control at trap sites
- Cats should not be allowed to roam freely in public areas
- Cats and dogs should be microchipped and registered
