Travelling during bushfire season

Published on Tuesday, 9 January 2024 at 10:40:06 AM

If you are travelling or staying near bushland this summer, bushfires may be a real risk to you and your safety.

It's important to have a plan in place if a bushfire impacts the area. Bushfires are dangerous and can be unpredictable, and should be avoided at all costs.

Leaving before a fire threatens is the safest option. Bushfires can happen suddenly and change quickly.

Stay alert to what is happening around you. If you believe you may be in danger and act immediately to stay safe.

Lifesaving tips:

  1.  Create a bushfire plan for your travels:
    - Let loved ones know your whereabouts and travel plans before leaving
    - Keep up to date with the DFES website
    - Look at the weather forecasts and predictions ahead and understand the roads you will be travelling

  2.  Pack an emergency kit: Your emergency kit should include...
    - Printed maps of the areas you're travelling as communications may go down if there is a bushfire
    - Portable AM/FM battery-operated radio with spare batteries
    - First aid kit and medication
    - Woolen blankets
    - Plenty of water
    - Mobile phone and charger
    - Protective clothing for everyone including sturdy shoes

  3.  Know the bushfire warning system: During a bushfire, emergency services will issue a warning if the fire is impacting or likely to impact the area and community
    - There are 3 levels of warning and these change to reflect the increasing risk to your life or property

  4.  Know the current fire danger rating for the area you are travelling to:

  5. Check if there is a total fire ban in the area you are travelling to:
    - Check if there’s a TFB in place by visiting Emergency WA or call the TFB Hotline on 1800 709 355

  6. Be prepared to change your travel plans:
    - When the fire danger rating is high or above, have a back-up destination in mind such as a town or city that is safer than a bushland area

  7.  Know where to get the latest bushfire information:
    - Emergency WA | Bushfire Overview
    - Call 13DFES (13 3337)
    - Call National Relay Service: 1800 555 677
    - Local ABC radio
    - DFES WA
