The Town of Port Hedland has done everything it could to support the South Hedland Bowling and Tennis Club (SHBTC).
Unfortunately, the business model was unsustainable and as such the committee has made the decision to enter into voluntary administration.
The SHBTC has a community lease with the Town, paying $200 per annum. It has an outstanding loan from the Town, provided in 2014 for upgrades to the facility.
The SHBTC is responsible for outgoings and maintenance.
Town representatives attended the SHBTC Annual General Meeting on 14 December. There was not sufficient attendance at the AGM for achieve a quorum, however the Town officers engaged with the committee members present to discuss their status, noting SHBTC’s 2023 financial report.
The Town officers were advised SHTBC was struggling to meet even the most basic of its financial obligations.
The Town provided insight and answered questions around loan terms, operations and risk associated with continuing to operate.
On 15 December, the Town was advised the committee had unanimously agreed to pursue winding up of operations.
As such, the club will cease operating from close of business Friday, 22 December, with an administrator to be appointed.
The Town will assume custodianship of the building and ensure it is secured over the Christmas break.
This is an unfortunate situation. The Town will consider future use of the facility in the new year.
