Public statement

Published on Monday, 18 December 2023 at 10:54:35 AM

The Town of Port Hedland has shown its commitment to compliance with the Aboriginal Heritage Act, having increased processes and protocols following the incident in the West End in June 2023.

The Town acknowledged and apologised for its inadvertent error from the outset, responded swiftly to the incident and has worked closely with Kariyarra Aboriginal Corporation to implement processes which will better identify and protect culturally significant sites.

Some of the new processes are:

  • Individual team briefings on cultural heritage, the Cultural Heritage Act and processes to be followed;
  • Teams are supplied with maps of site locations, which are updated weekly as required;
  • No work will be conducted in any identified area without consent and risk assessment provided by Kariyarra Aboriginal Corporation; and
  • Implementation of new processes whereby teams walk the site subject of works and determine if any cultural sites are obvious.

 The Town respects the decision of the court.
