Recycling and buying secondhand goods at the South Hedland Landfill is set to become a reality as the Town seeks construction contractors.
The Town of Port Hedland is planning to build a Community Transfer and Recycling Centre.
The Centre will include dedicated areas for the recycling of e-waste, white goods, tyres, metals, batteries, mattresses, cardboard, green waste and more.
A reuse shop will also be built where items are salvaged and made available for sale to the public.
Town of Port Hedland Mayor Peter Carter said the project aligned with the Town’s Waste Management Strategy.
“Our waste management goal is to conserve landfill space by reducing waste and diverting recycling away from landfill,” Mayor Carter said.
“Developing a Community Recycling Centre is a priority to help achieve this goal. In addition, we consistently hear from the Hedland community that a reuse shop is desired – I am looking forward to seeing this become a reality through this project.
“The project will come back to Council for endorsement following a tender process, which is now being advertised,” Mayor Carter said.
Construction of the Centre is part of a package of upgrade works planned for the South Hedland Landfill in 2024. As part of the work the Town will also double its capacity for accepting liquid waste.
Currently about 30,000 litres of liquid waste are deposited at the wastewater facility located within the South Hedland landfill site.
The waste comes from as far as Broome and provides a crucial service for areas that do not have a wastewater treatment plant.
A new wastewater pond will be constructed to enable the liner of the current pond to be replaced as part of construction works.
Once work is completed, both ponds will operate. This will double the Town’s capacity for accepting liquid waste.
