Pilbara Underground Power Project to commence in South Hedland
In December 2011, the Town of Port Hedland and Horizon Power signed an agreement which will see the commencement of the undergrounding of power in South Hedland and Wedgefield. The $43 million Pilbara Underground Power Project (PUPP) is a partnership
between the Government of Western Australia (through the Royalties for Regions Pilbara Cities program) and Local Government Authorities, delivered by Horizon Power. Works will commence in South Hedland next week, with contractors Logsys, carrying
out a trial in the areas near the Murdoch Drive Power Sub-station. Installation of underground power in Wedgefield is expected to commence in April/May 2012. Ratepayers will be notified prior to works commencing. With the recent power losses experienced during
Tropical Cyclone Heidi, the project highlights the urgent need for underground power - in addition to reducing the likelihood of power loss during severe weather, underground power will also assist in reducing the risk of overhanging or falling powerlines, and improve
the visual amenity of South Hedland and Wedgefield and bring it on par with Port Hedland, which had power undergrounded in 2006/07. Council is contributing 25 percent towards the cost of the project, totalling an estimated $10.8 million and the contribution will be funded
by South Hedland and Wedgefield ratepayers. Ratepayers will be charged approximately $2300 in the 2012/13 Financial Year, and will have the option to pay this cost over a five year period. Council is currently investigating the possibility of providing concessions to
pensioners, not for profits, owner-occupier residentials and owner-occupiers businesses as part of the 2012/13 Annual Budget process.
The project will be carried out over a 15 month period and is expected to be completed by June/July 2013. For more information please email Horizon
Power Community Relations Manager Monika Page, or call 0428 979 283.
