Rates Concession and Exemption
Each financial year, community members and community groups have the opportunity to apply to the Town of Port Hedland for rates concessions and exemptions, as per our policy and Local Government Act 1995.

Rates Concessions For Pensioners Or Seniors
If you are a Pensioner or Senior and you meet the eligibility criteria, you may be eligible to claim a rebate of up to 50% of your current years rates and the Emergency Services Levy (a levy collected on behalf of the WA State Government to fund the fire brigade and SES services). If you hold only the WA Seniors Card you may be eligible to claim a rebate of up to 25%, which is capped to an annual maximum amount. Alternatively, depending on property ownership and which of the following cards you hold, you may be eligible to defer payment of the annual Rates and Emergency Services Levy. The option to defer is not available to persons who hold only a WA Seniors Card.
To receive a concession you must hold a current:
- Pensioner Concession Card; or
- State Concession Card; or
- Commonwealth Seniors Health Card and a WA Seniors Cards; or
AND on 1st July of the current financial year, you must own and occupy the property as your ‘ordinary place of residence’.
If you are currently receiving a rates concession (rebate or deferment) and your circumstances have changed, you must immediately advise Council of these changes.

Pensioners concession on Local Government rates to be capped from 1 July 2016
Community members, in particular pensioners, are advised that changes to concessions provided by State Government will come into effect on 1 July 2016.
From the commencement of the 2016-17 rating year, pensioners who claim a concession using a Pensioner Concession Card, State Concession Card, or WA Seniors Card and Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, will have their rebate limited to a maximum amount.
This change was announced as part of the 2015/16 State Budget and means that the former 50 per cent concession allowed to eligible pensioners on local government rates will be restricted to a capped limit of $750.
