On Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October, the Civic Centre Gardens will come alive with Puppet in the Pilbara – The Last Numbat, a giant interactive puppetry event presented by Spare Parts Puppet Theatre and originally commissioned by the City of South Perth.

Spare Parts Puppet Theatre is Australia’s flagship puppetry company, entertaining and enriching audiences over its 40 year history.

Made possible by Gold Sponsor BHP, the two day Town event will invite 17 audience members at any one time to participate by manipulating a giant numbat puppet, supported by trusses and directed by professional puppeteers.

Exploring themes of connection, collaboration and sustainability, the event will also feature interactive workshops, community stalls and food vendors for the whole family to enjoy.

The Last Numbat tells the story of a numbat who believes she is the last of her kind in the world. As participants manipulate the giant puppet, onlookers can marvel at the beauty of the magnificent creation and absorb the story.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP welcomed the return of larger events to Hedland in line with easing COVID-19 restrictions across Western Australia.

“I’d like to commend the Town for spearheading Puppet in the Pilbara – The Last Numbat, the Pilbara’s first giant interactive puppetry event made possible by Gold Sponsor BHP.

“Due to the community’s hard work in keeping COVID-19 under control, the Town was able to plan a larger event which brought the community together again. We’re fortunate to be enjoying freedoms here in WA which simply aren’t possible in other places.

“Run over two days in October, the event will also feature a diverse selection of interactive workshops, community stalls and food vendors to supplement the puppetry’s message and boost the local economy.

“The Town is committed to delivering innovative events in Hedland which engage locals, attract regional tourists and support our small business community.”

More information about the event will be released closer to the date on this web page
