Construction has started on a new external ring road at South Hedland Cemetery, part of the Town’s upgrade of the site to create a peaceful and serene space for local residents to pay their respects.

The ring road upgrade is part of stage 1 works of the Cemetery Masterplan, funded through a capital works budget of $900,000.

Yurra are the contractors undertaking the works, a business established in Port Hedland in 2010 with the shared goal of delivering sustainable procurement benefits to the community.

Once operational, the ring road will provide visitors with better vehicular access to the Cemetery.

Further scheduled works for the site include pathway improvements with better accessibility, seating areas, landscaping, wayfinding signage, an entry statement and more.

Mayor Peter Carter welcomed the progress so far made on delivering on the site’s Masterplan.

“I’d like to thank Town staff and local contractors, Yurra, for starting work on the new external ring road at South Hedland Cemetery, part of stage 1 works for the site.

“The South Hedland Cemetery Masterplan aims to realise a respectful, serene, comfortable and peaceful environment which celebrates our unique place in the Pilbara.

“From meeting with locals, it’s clear that South Hedland Cemetery holds a special place of significance for our community, which is why we’re committed to upgrading its amenity to the highest standard for the future.

“It’s great to see the engagement of local contractors, Yurra, an organisation established here in Hedland who employ over 100 people and support the local economy.

“The Town is delivering a record capital works program, investing in core infrastructure assets to build a better future for our community.”
