The detailed design for cyclists and pedestrians to safely travel between Port and South Hedland is being developed as part of the Wilson Street Shared Bike Path Project, which is being funded equally by the Town and through a Western Australia Bicycle Network (WABN) grant from the Department of Transport.
The Project intends to link the cycle network from Redbank Bridge to Cooke Point Road and McGregor Street in Port Hedland and will be constructed over different stages. Currently, the path from South Hedland ceases at Redbank Bridge and does not extend to Port Hedland.
Once completed, the linked pathway will encourage more residents to cycle and walk between Port and South Hedland and will improve the safety of Wilson Street.
The WABN grant is one of the key actions detailed in the Western Australian Bicycle Network Plan 2014-2031, which sets out a framework for a safe and sustainable cycling network across WA.
Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP welcomed the Town’s success in obtaining funding through the WABN grant.
“Our strategic goal is to become a connected town which is accessible and pedestrian and cyclist friendly. The Wilson Street Shared Bike Project will give local residents the opportunity to cycle or walk between Port and South with ease.
“There’s also significant benefits for tourists, who will be able to use the path to easily transit between the two town centres and discover more of Hedland on their trip.
“Due to our town’s proximity to industry, Wilson Street is regularly frequented with heavy vehicles. The Path will separate cyclists and pedestrians from all road users, an important safety benefit.
“Through the established procurement process, the Town will now embark on determining a suitable organisation to complete the Projects’ detailed design.”
