Want to stand for Council? Come along to the prospective candidate information session

Published on Thursday, 20 August 2020 at 11:03:13 AM

Prospective candidates for the upcoming local government elections are invited to attend a free information session at 5:30pm, Monday 31 August in the Civic Centre Chambers.

The information session will provide an overview of local government and the roles and responsibilities of the Council and Elected Members. It will also provide an opportunity for residents to meet with representatives from the Town and the Western Australian Electoral Commission (WAEC).

Nominations for the election open at 8am on Thursday 3 September and close at 4pm on Thursday 10 September 2020.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP is encouraging residents thinking about running for Council to attend the free information session.

“It’s a big decision to run for Council, so it’s important to be as well informed as possible about the role of an Elected Member and the responsibilities associated with serving your community.

"Prospective candidates will have the opportunity to ask any questions they may have about running in the upcoming election at the session, which will be attended by a member of the WAEC.

"Perhaps you’ve been involved in local community organisations in town, run small businesses or have big ideas for Hedland. Now is the time to start thinking about putting your hand up to sit on Council and influence the town’s future.”
