Town's Local Planning Strategy endorsed by Western Australian Planning Commission

Published on Wednesday, 26 May 2021 at 4:55:09 PM

The Town’s Local Planning Strategy (Strategy) was endorsed by the Western Australian Planning Commission (WAPC) on Thursday 13 May. The Strategy now serves as the Town’s principal strategic planning document.

The Strategy will guide land use planning and development within the local government area for the next 15 years, informing the implementation of the Town’s Local Planning Scheme No. 7 (Scheme).

Preparation of the Strategy was informed by community and stakeholder insights gathered during 2019’s extensive Shaping Hedland’s Future consultation.

The Strategy will be implemented through the application of the Town’s Scheme and other planning instruments, targeted strategies, advocacy on planning issues and key stakeholder partnerships.

Providing protections for the natural and built environment, guiding the efficient and effective use of resources and the delivery of key land, services and infrastructure are all objectives of the Strategy.

Mayor Peter Carter welcomed WAPC’s endorsement of the Strategy.

“The Town’s recently endorsed Local Planning Strategy is timely, with Hedland positioned for significant growth as a result of a robust resources industry; resilience in the face of the global COVID-19 pandemic; record public infrastructure investment and a renewed policy focus on attracting skills workers and families to live locally.

“The Strategy balances the social, cultural, economic and environmental needs of the community, industry and other stakeholders to guide the next 15 years of land use planning and development in the local government area.”
