The Town welcomes today’s announcement from the state government that BHP, Rio Tinto, Alliance Airlines and Qantas will be making regional fares more accessible and affordable, connecting Perth to regional WA.
BHP will reduce community airfares on Alliance Airlines flights to $299.00 one way, on the Port Hedland to Perth and Newman to Perth routes. This initiative will provide up to 300 seats per week to Newman and Port Hedland.
BHP’s Community Airfares will be available for Pilbara residents and visiting friends and family who do not live in Newman and Port Hedland.
Rio Tinto has partnered with Qantas to deliver three return Qantas flights per week between Onslow and Perth from $329.00, doubling the number of flights available.
Reduced airfares connecting metropolitan centres with regional WA supports Hedland’s local economy by potentially increasing visitation numbers, subsequently boosting the tourism and hospitality sectors.
Mayor Peter Carter welcomed the announcement of more affordable airfares.
“The Town commends BHP, Rio Tinto, Alliance Airlines and Qantas for working with the state government to make regional fares more accessible and affordable for Hedland residents.
“Cheaper airfares support the Town’s goal of creating a liveable and attractive township for local families, who will be able to affordably travel to Perth when required.
“After a challenging 12 months, the Town welcomes measures to boost intrastate travel to encourage more Perth residents to discover the wonders of WA’s North West region.
“I’m pleased the initiative also support small businesses and not-for-profit organisations in Port Hedland and Newman, where contractors are required to fly in to assist operations.
“We welcome the state government taking action on their commitments to reduce airfares for Pilbara residents, and Council and I look forward to further announcements moving forward.”
