Published on Wednesday, 11 May 2022 at 2:13:20 PM

The Town welcomes the State Government’s announcement of a $78 million investment to progress the development of Lumsden Point, a critical economic infrastructure project for the region’s future.

Part of the 2022/23 State budget, the investment is projected to grow capacity at the Port of Port Hedland, diversifying trade, driving investment and creating a projected 460 jobs per year.

Lumsden Point will facilitate the export of battery metals such as lithium and copper concentrates, the import of renewable energy infrastructure, including wind turbines and blades, and support the rapid growth of direct shipping services to the Pilbara.

The development supports the objectives of the Town’s Economic Development and Tourism Strategy 2021, including the growth of the renewable energies sector and promoting employment opportunities.

Mayor Peter Carter welcomes the announcement as a positive sign for the region’s economic diversification.

“I’m pleased the State Government has committed to investing $78 million into developing Lumsden Point, which will make renewable energy a key pillar of the region’s energy mix for the future.

“The Town welcomes investment that create Pilbara based jobs, broadens our economic base and recognises the primacy of the Port of Port Hedland to the nation’s prosperity.”
