The Town of Port Hedland has been granted $34,000 as part of the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries Senior Adults Living Triumphantly (SALT) program.

This funding will support a seniors wellbeing program for Hedland residents aged 60 and over, aiming to improve their health, quality of life and fitness.

SALT is a result of the State Government’s 2019/20 Targeted Participation Program funding, which seeks to engage low participation groups with a range of community sport and active recreational activities across WA.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP said the funding would enable the Town to deliver positive outcomes for Hedland’s senior citizens.

“I’d like to thank the Minister for Seniors and Ageing, the Hon. Mick Murray MLA, for granting the Town $34,000 as part of the Senior Adults Living Triumphantly (SALT) program.

“There’s around 1,000 residents in Hedland who are over 60. We believe in the importance of engaging this age group to live healthy, active and fulfilled lives in our community.

“The SALT program will be the first of its kind for seniors in Hedland.

“A Hedland based SALT program will give older residents the opportunity to participate in free, weekly recreational activities such as yoga and Pilates. The sessions will be followed by morning tea and information sessions on topics such as fall prevention, mental health and the importance of healthy diets.

“The funding will also contribute to the costs of providing free, accessible transport to and from the SALT program sessions.

“SALT will complement the positive outcomes achieved by the Older Wiser Library Seniors (OWLS) initiative, a Town initiative launched in May 2018 to empower older residents to share their wisdom, passion and experiences.

“A key tenant of the Town’s Strategic Community Plan is to work towards an inclusive and involved community.

“I look forward to seeing the delivery of SALT sessions in 2020, and I encourage everyone to spread the word about this fantastic initiative.”
