Town and WA Police Pilbara partner for better road safety

Published on Friday, 24 June 2022 at 2:43:00 PM

In partnership with WA Police Pilbara, the Town has installed substantial stones weighing between 12 to 15 tonnes in strategic locations across South Hedland.

The installation of the stones was requested by WA Police in response to recent vehicle theft in the town.

The locations of the stones were strategically selected to allow Police Officers to safely deploy stingers during police vehicle pursuits, reducing harm to community members and offenders.

Stingers are a device placed on roads to stop vehicles in pursuit by puncturing tyres.

Mayor Peter Carter welcomed the joint initiative as a pro-active measure to reduce the impact of vehicle pursuits in the local community.

"I'm pleased the Town and WA Police Pilbara have partnered to deliver this strategic project across South Hedland, which will assist officers in their efforts to stop offenders in their tracks, reducing high speed pursuits and alleviating noise impacts felt by surrounding premises."

"The Town and WA Police Pilbara are committed to improving community safety and making our streets safer for local residents."
