The future of land use planning in Hedland takes shape

Published on Wednesday, 17 June 2020 at 8:37:32 AM

A 90 day public feedback period has started for the Town’s draft Local Planning Strategy and the Local Planning Scheme 7, set to guide the next 10 to 20 years of land use planning and development in Hedland.

Following the 90 day period, the final documents will be considered by Council for adoption, with a recommendation forwarded to the Western Australian Planning Commissioner for endorsement.

The Strategy will set out the long term planning direction for Hedland, apply any relevant State or regional planning policies and will provide rationale for any zoning or classification of land under the local planning scheme.

The Scheme will be the principal statutory planning tool for controlling land use and development in the Town, setting out how land will be used and developed and will include provisions to coordinate future infrastructure and development projects.

The initial Shaping Hedland community consultation process occurred between July and November 2019, garnering key insights which were used in the preparation of the Strategy and the Scheme.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP encouraged residents to view the Strategy and the Scheme to peruse the insights.

“Public feedback is now invited for the Town’s Local Planning Strategy and Local Planning Scheme 7, integral blueprints for shaping how land use planning and development occurs in Hedland over the next 10 to 20 years.

“Key insights uncovered last year included a desire to unlock more opportunities for business development and tourism, the protection of coastal and inland waterways as a priority and the identification of preferred sites for future residential development.

“Other insights included a lack of infrastructure to support economic activity outside of town sites, support for greater maintenance of existing public spaces and the identification of the highway precinct within the airport grounds as the preferred site to base transport logistics.

“Submissions to both the Strategy and the Scheme are asked to be emailed to eplanning@porthedland.wa.gov.au in the first instance, with reference to the Strategy or the Scheme and the property affected. The deadline for all submissions is 15 September 2020.”
