Sutherland Street path set to connect Port Hedland

Published on Thursday, 25 June 2020 at 9:43:47 AM

The Town will be developing a shared pedestrian and cycle path along Sutherland Street, located between the upcoming Marina development and the West End precinct of Port Hedland.

The path will be constructed on crown designated land, serving as a crucial link between the West End district and the Spoilbank Marina development.

Since 2008, the area has been identified in a number of strategic documents as a ‘missing link’ in the existing network of pedestrian and cycle paths, such as the Town of Port Hedland Cycle Plan (2008) and the Pilbara Cycling Strategy 2050 (2020).

Once the path is constructed, residents and tourists alike will be granted more accessibility to the Spoilbank Marina development, Cemetery Beach and East Port Hedland.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP said the pathway provided residents with a number of benefits, both in the short and long term.

“The Sutherland Street shared pedestrian and cycle path will be constructed on crown designated land, finally linking the West End district to the Spoilbank Marina development area.

“For over a decade, the Town has indicated its intention to construct this important link in Port Hedland’s pedestrian and cycle path network. Cycling enthusiasts and avid walkers will be able to transit between Sutherland Street and the West End, particularly beneficial once the Spoilbank Marina has been constructed.

“Extensive community consultation for the Strategic Community Plan 2018-2028 uncovered a desire to improve Hedland’s existing infrastructure, particularly in regards to upgrading the amenity of Hedland’s pathway network.

“The Town is committed to continually improving Hedland’s pathway network for liveability and lifestyle factors for local families.

“Letters have been sent to residents and stakeholders in the vicinity of the works, outlining the pathway and in more detail.”
