Submit before you start to build safely this cyclone season

Building service providers and property owners are reminded of the importance of complying with The Building Services (Registrations) Act 2011 and the Building Act 2011.

The Registrations Act requires that an individual, partnership or company that carries out, or contracts to carry out, ‘builder-work’ valued over $20,000 must be listed on the State Government’s Register of Builders.

Engaging an unregistered builder to carry out works valued over $20,000 increases the likelihood of unsafe building practices taking place, potentially endangering the community.

It is also crucial to ensure all relevant building permits are submitted and approved by the Town before any on site works commence.

Mayor Peter Carter urged building service providers and property owners to comply with both Acts and submit all relevant building applications before works commence.

“With Hedland now in cyclone season, it’s even more important for all parties involved with property building works to comply with The Building Services (Registrations) Act 2011 and the Building Act 2011.

“If you’re a property owner thinking about building a fence, erecting a shade sail, re-roofing, refurbishing or any other works with a value above $20,000, you need to make sure the contractors you engage are listed on the State Government’s Register of Builders.

“If you’re a building service provider, you need to make sure you are listed on the Register of Builders and are compliant with the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety.

“It’s important to keep in mind that if you’re planning on conducting any building works on your property, you will need to submit all relevant building permits with the Town before works commence. All details can be found via www.porthedland.wa.gov.au.”
