The Town of Port Hedland pays respects to former Prime Minister Bob Hawke, who passed away yesterday evening.
Mr Hawke was the only Australian Prime Minister to be raised and educated in Western Australia, serving from 1983 to 1991.
Regarded as a transformative political leader, Mr Hawke’s public policy achievements included the introduction of Medicare in 1984, floating the Australian dollar and negotiating a wage accord between business and unions.
Mayor Camilo Blanco reflected on the legacy Mr Hawke built, one steeped in both long term vision and an appreciation for the everyday Australian.
“On behalf of our town, I wish to pay my respects to Mr Hawke and his family, to a man whose contribution to public life changed the future of Australia.
“One of the unique traits Mr Hawke had was an ability to be at ease on the international stage in the same way as the footy field, connecting with everyone on a genuine level.
“He had a commitment to giving all Australians a fair go, having the tenacity to translate big ideas into real change on the ground.
“He didn’t shy away from fighting for his beliefs and standing for equality, appointing the first sex discrimination commissioner in 1984 and fighting against racism.
“By 1991, Australia was a more multicultural, vibrant and prosperous nation with stronger international relationships and taller standing on the world stage.
“Regardless of politics, we can all appreciate the magnitude of change Mr Hawke affected during his tenure which lasts to this day.”
