Stand up and say no to domestic and family violence

Published on Saturday, 2 November 2019 at 9:10:00 AM

Community members are invited to attend the 2019 Hedland March Against Family Violence, on Friday 22 November, 7am at Centenary Park on Leake Street.

The march, coordinated by the Hedland Family Violence Action Group, aims to bring  together residents, community organisations and stakeholders to send a strong message against domestic and family violence.

Statistically, women in regional and remote Australia are more likely than women in urban areas to experience domestic and family violence.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling said the march was an event steeped in the deeply personal experiences of many locals.

“As we come together on 22 November, we must remember that a woman in Australia is murdered by her current or former partner every week.

“The troubling statistics remind us that more work must be done, whether through raising awareness, reporting incidents or supporting our loved ones.

“A positive sign is the greater willingness people have to talk about the reality of the situation and seek out support services.

“I am committed to working with stakeholders across the community and all levels of Government to ensure the Town is involved in finding solutions, and helping where we can.”
