Spring clean your yard with the Town's pre-cyclone season green waste clean up

Palm fronds, tree loppings and branches will be the focus of the Town of Port Hedland’s annual free pre-cyclone season green waste clean-up, kicking off Monday 31 August.

The yearly green waste collection service enables residents and community members to clear yards and gardens of excess green waste ahead of the upcoming cyclone season.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP said it was a prime opportunity for community members to prepare for the upcoming cyclone season.

“It’s spring cleaning time: get ready for the Town’s annual pre-cyclone season green waste clean-up! This year, the collection will start on Monday 31 August and run for around three weeks.

“I encourage all community members to clear out green waste from gardens, remove leaves from drains and trim trees of excess height and growth to enable them to withstand high winds.

“As part of preparing our homes and premises for potentially catastrophic weather events, it is important that we minimise the risk of flying debris. Excess green waste can fly through the air at tremendous speeds during a cyclone, causing property damage.

“We are only collecting green waste material as part of this initiative. Residents can dispose of any other waste at South Hedland Landfill, free of charge, to help prepare for cyclone season.

“Residents and property owners are asked to neatly stack green waste on their verge and ensure it does not obstruct footpaths, street lighting, water metres, fencing, driveways, drainage pits or roadways.

“Green waste should be loose or tied into bundles. Leaves should be tied or placed in a non-plastic bag or cardboard box.

“The Town’s free collection includes all green waste - tree loppings, palm fronds, branches, leaves and weeds - and must be no longer than 1.5 metres in length and be able to be carried by two people.

“We will not be collecting white goods, batteries, flammable objects, commercial waste, plastic or any other household rubbish.

”Residents need to ensure that green waste is on the kerb by Monday 31 August."
