#shoWcAse embracing change in Pixels

Published on Thursday, 9 June 2022 at 9:25:38 AM

Local submissions are invited for the 2022 Statewide #shoWcAse in Pixels Competition embodying the theme embracing change, with the selected artwork from the Town of Port Hedland displayed at the iconic 45 metre digital tower in the heart of Yagan Square in Perth City.

As one of WA’s largest ongoing community arts projects, the event is widely acknowledged as one of the most colourful and vibrant displays throughout the year.

For the first time, the competition is accepting video submissions.

Submission categories run across junior primary school (pre-primary to year 3); upper primary school (year 4 to 6); secondary school (year 7 to 12); community group/non-professional and professional/digital (including video).

Submissions should be easily identifiable to Hedland; include the clearly displayed name of the Council (Port Hedland or Hedland); incorporate the theme embracing change; use colour and creativity and display composition and artistic merit.

Printed or digital media can be used to create the artwork. However, digitally created artwork can only be included in the professional/digital category.

Regarding submissions, only photographs of physical artworks can be submitted. For example, if an artwork is created via paint on canvas, a photo must be taken of the work to be submitted.

Mayor Peter Carter encouraged local creatives to get involved in the competition to put Port on the Pixel.

“We’re inviting submissions for the #ShoWcAse in Pixels Competition, a WALGA initiative celebrating the diversity of creativity and unique sense of place across our great State.

“Whether you’re a school student or adult keen to be involved, your submission should reflect the theme embracing change and be easily identifiable to Hedland: think salt towers, ships, turtles, iron ore trains, our unique community or our stunning landscape.

“This is a fantastic initiative which spotlights regional creativity in the middle of Perth, supporting outcomes in the Town’s Arts and Culture Strategy 2019-22 such as looking for ways to amplify local talent.”
