Please be advised the Town of Port Hedland has cancelled a number of scheduled events for 2020, in response to the unfolding Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.
As of 18 March, the Federal Government’s directive is to ban on all non-essential indoor gatherings of 100 people or more and outdoor gatherings of 500 people or more.
The following Town events are cancelled for 2020:
- Sunset Food Markets, 20 March & 17 April
- Twilight Movies, 7 March, 11 April & 13 June
- A New Owner, 15 April
- Mother’s Day Classic, 10 May
- Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow, 15 May
- Welcome to Hedland, 22 May
A final decision regarding the Spinifex Spree and North West Festival will be made in the coming weeks.
Ticket sales for all upcoming movie screenings at the Matt Dann Theatre and Cinema will be capped at 100 – this may change with updated advice.
Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP acknowledged the decision to cancel upcoming events would disappoint many residents; however, public health must take precedence.
“As a local government, we are responsible for taking precautionary measures to minimise risks to health at public events in the face of this pandemic.
“I understand the decision to cancel events will be disappointing to many residents; however, we must work collaboratively with all levels of government to limit the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) by following all advice and directives.
“In addition, the Town is proactively ensuring all facilities are cleaned thoroughly with anti-bacterial chemicals daily, ensuring hand sanitiser is available at Town facilities and ensuring up to date, trusted information is provided on the Town of Port Hedland website.
“I would again like to reiterate that during these uncertain times, it is important for everyone in the community to be kind and work together in the best interests of public health.
