Safe Hazardous Waste Disposal Reduces Risks

Published on Tuesday, 27 November 2018 at 10:09:00 AM

The Hedland Community is reminded to safely dispose of hazardous waste to minimise environmental health risks.

Hazardous waste should only be disposed of during regular landfill operating hours: Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 4.15pm.

Hazardous waste is not permitted to be disposed of in the blue afterhours skip bins located outside the landfill.

In particular, asbestos waste poses significant health risks to humans and the environment when disposed of in an open air bin.

When asbestos is released into the environment, it contaminates the air, water and soil, as well as increasing the risks of asbestos related illness.

It must be disposed of in a controlled manner to mitigate it affecting the surrounding environment.

These are the hazardous waste materials which much be disposed of during regular landfill operation hours:

  • Medical waste, including needles
  • Sewage
  • Asbestos
  • Explosive materials, including flares and ammunition
  • Acid
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Pesticides
  • Chemical Waste
