The Town has restricted access to sensitive parts of 4 mile, Pretty Pool by strategically placing oversized rocks to stabilise dunes and prevent erosion.
The oversized rocks will prevent unauthorised vehicles from entering onto the region’s fragile dune system, an important part of Hedland’s unique biodiversity.
Visitors to the area are reminded that off road access is strictly prohibited. Please keep to existing tracks when walking within the area to prevent damage to flora and fauna.
Mayor Carter urged local residents and tourists to abide by the spirit of the program by not entering unauthorised areas.
“The Town’s Restricted Access Program has run for a number of years, minimising the impact of unauthorised vehicles entering residential or sensitive areas across the local government area.
“For example, we’ve seen reductions in the number of quad bikes crossing over North Circular Road in South Hedland since the installation of oversized rocks there.
“The installation of oversized rocks at 4 mile, Pretty Pool intends to stop four wheel drives, quad bikes, motorbikes or any other unauthorised vehicle from crossing over and destabilising our precious dune systems.
“The Town’s Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan guides us to implement measures which strengthen and protect the integrity of our dune systems, which are susceptible to the impacts of erosion and inundation into the future.
“We also don’t want to see unauthorised vehicles disturbing our flatback turtle friends in the area, an endangered species with only 20,000 left in the wild.
“I ask pedestrians to please stick to the established walking tracks in the area to prevent erosion.”
