Port Hedland Leisure has celebrated three years of in-house management under the Town of Port Hedland, recording significant achievements and overcoming the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic to deliver excellence in health, fitness and recreation service to the local community.

Port Hedland Leisure is the Town managed brand responsible for Wanangkura Stadium, the Gratwick Aquatic and Fitness Centre, South Hedland Aquatic Centre and other physical and sporting ventures across Hedland.

Membership numbers have increased from 1,000 members in April 2019 to over 1,900 members in 2022; there have been over one million visits to leisure facilities since April 2019; over 5,000 fitness classes performed; more than 6,000 children and adults taught to swim; more than 35,000 creche visits; over 400,000 gym visits across Gratwick Gym and Wanangkura Stadium and over 450,000 visits to the South Hedland and Gratwick Aquatic Centres.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Port Hedland Leisure pivoted to delivering online fitness classes to keep connected with members, and has been at the forefront of adapting to ongoing public health requirements.

In 2020, the Gratwick Aquatic and Fitness Centre underwent extensive refurbishment, modernising the space with state-of-the-art fitness equipment and creating shade around the pool.

In 2021, a first of its kind Memorandum of Understanding with Royal Life Saving WA was established to enhance aquatic employment pathways for local young people.

Port Hedland Leisure was a finalist in the 2021 Parks and Leisure Awards of Excellence and has again been nominated in the Awards for 2022.

Mayor Peter Carter congratulated Port Hedland Leisure on their successes over the last three years.

“Port Hedland Leisure overcame the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, recording significant increases in membership numbers, facility visits, fitness classes, swimming lessons and more by delivering on their mantra of fitness for all in our community.”

“I congratulate all staff who made these successes possible, working hard to meet the public health requirements of the pandemic all while providing excellence in customer service and offering diverse health and fitness options for all ages to enjoy.”

“A strong and positive staffing culture has been cultivated across the facilities, encouraging growth and personal development in a supportive environment.”

“I look forward to seeing Port Hedland Leisure grow from strength to strength in the years ahead.”
