Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling has welcomed the significant progress made on the Port Hedland International Airport (PHIA) redevelopment, including an additional 15,000 square metres of new taxiway pavement and the unveiling of the terminal design.
"PHIA Group Chairman, the Hon. Cheryl Edwardes AM, has overseen the vision to create a redeveloped airport grounded in infrastructure improvements which will take aviation in Hedland to new heights.
"I'd like to commend the PHIA for completing upgrades to airside pavements and infrastructure, expanding capacity and further meeting the aviation needs of the Pilbara's growing economy.
"Better runway lighting, signage, helicopter parking, new asphalt overlay and more, improves the town's capabilities to meet growth demands and safety and security standards into the future.
"I'm particularly pleased the extension of the general aviation apron will facilitate the safe operation of the Royal Flying Doctor Service's new PC-24 aircraft.
"The newly unveiled terminal design by global architects, Woods Bagot, is visually spectacular and responds to Hedland's unique environmental conditions and improves functionality.
"ln July 2019, Council endorsed the PHIA Masterplan and $40 million capital works program, reflecting the Town's long term goal to drive tourism and trade in the Pilbara.
"The significant progress made by the PHIA since it took over the lease of the airport in 2016 is commendable, and I look forward to seeing the final terminal construction in mid 2021."
