Significant jobs growth, increased economic output and royalty contributions are detailed in the Port Hedland Industries Council’s (PHIC) report: The Economic Significance of the Port of Port Hedland, with port activity projected to generate an additional 5,307 jobs across Australia by 2028/29.

Compiled by ACIL Consulting, the report found the port’s economic contribution accounting for 20 per cent of WA’s Gross State Product in 2018/19. By 2028/29, port activity is projected to contribute an additional $21 billion in taxes and royalties across WA and Australia.

In 2018/19, the port supply chain supported one in every 12 WA jobs, and directly input $531.8 million into the Port Hedland economy.

The strong projections give confidence to residents, investors and business that the Pilbara will continue its role as Australia’s economic engine.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP welcomed the release and contents of the report, pointing to increased growth translating into community benefits.

“I’d like to thank the PHIC and its members for producing The Economic Significance of the Port of Port Hedland, providing all levels of government with key decision making information and insights.

“Particularly in the context of contractions in the broader economy, the release of the PHIC’s report demonstrates how important the port’s operations are to the heart of Australia’s prosperity.

“Jobs are on the minds of communities across Australia, with port activity potentially providing more opportunities for people to change careers.

“By 2028/29, the additional 5,307 port supply chain jobs will support the living standards of hundreds of households, with every full time port job creating two more full time jobs in the broader Hedland economy.

“The Town is strategically committed to supporting jobs growth; we understand that more job opportunities will help retain our population, particularly our young people.

“The projected $2.3 billion in WA royalties will contribute to the state government’s ability to invest in the regions, building the infrastructure and delivering the services we’ll need for the future.”
