Local community members who exemplify outstanding citizenship were awarded at this morning’s 2020 Community Citizen of the Year Awards, with similar events held across WA.

Community Citizen of the Year Awards give WA local governments the opportunity to reward and recognise individuals and organisations who have made notable contributions during the previous year, or who have given outstanding service over a number of years.

The Patron of the Community Citizen of the Year Awards is the Hon. Kim Beazley AC, Governor of Western Australia.

The ITOCHU Minerals & Energy Australia Young Community Citizen of the Year is Brandon Herwig, in recognition of his work regenerating e-waste for transformative environmental and social outcomes.

The Port Hedland RSL Senior Community Citizen of the Year is Janet Gillingham, in recognition of her active role in the Hedland community for over 30 years as an Elected Member, generous and supportive community member and pioneer of the Pilbara Music Festival.

The Horizon Power Award for Active Citizenship was awarded to Hedland School of Dance, for their drive and determination in delivering high calibre dance education and participation in Hedland.

The Roy Hill Community Citizen of the Year is Jeremy Marklew, in recognition of his work as Senior Sergeant Officer in charge of South Hedland Police Station, successfully reducing youth crime and crime overall during his tenure in Hedland.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling said the awards were a chance to come together to reward and celebrate those who contribute to communal life.

“I’d like to congratulate all the nominees and winners of the 2020 Community Citizen of the Year Awards, recognising those who give generously of their time to make Hedland a great place to call home and raise a family.

“There is great diversity in this year’s award recipients: a young man who regenerates e-waste for social capital, a musical festival pioneer, an inclusive dance school and Senior Sergeant Officer: all roles representative of exemplary citizenship.

“I’d like to thank ITOCHU Minerals & Energy Australia, the Port Hedland RSL, Horizon Power and Roy Hill for making these awards possible.

“I’d also like to extend a welcome to all those new citizens we welcomed in the Citizenship Ceremony earlier this morning; I wish you all the very best for your future here in Australia.”
