Opportunity for community members to have their say on the future of our foreshore

Published on Monday, 27 July 2020 at 2:41:33 PM

The Town of Port Hedland has launched Our Coastal Future, a public engagement campaign to inform the development of the Town’s Coastal Foreshore Management Plan (CFMP).

The CFMP will provide recommendations and specific actions for managing the coastline. Cyclones, erosion and rising sea levels are significant challenges which need to be planned for and managed into the future.

The Town’s CFMP will help protect and enhance the stretch of coastline extending from Marapikurrinya Park through to Six Mile Creek, and will be informed by the Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Plan, as well as studies completed after the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Veronica.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP said it was an exciting opportunity for the community to get involved in planning for the foreshore area.

“One of the reasons why Port Hedland is such a remarkable place to live is the easy access we have to such a spectacular coastline, so we are calling on all those who have an interest in the preservation of this incredible asset to have their say on how we manage it into the future.

‘Technical studies into the risk and impact of coastal changes over recent years have shown us some options and opportunities for this stretch of coastline between Marapikurrinya Park and Six Mile Creek.

“This plan will bring the findings from these studies together and provide some clarity to the Town and the community about how to implement them and protect the cultural, social and environmental value of the area.
‘This is a wonderful opportunity for you to have a say in the future of the place where you live.  Your local knowledge and experience is extremely important and valued.”
