Published on Friday, 10 July 2020 at 10:34:30 AM

Construction on the new McGregor Street soccer clubrooms is underway, delivering on the Town’s commitment to supporting local sporting clubs.

Works include new showers and toilets including a universal access toilet, a commercial kitchen and servery area, tiered seating and pavilion roof extension and meeting and first aid rooms, all set to be completed for a projected cost of approximately $400,000.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP said the upgrades were part of the Town’s commitment to delivering a safe and fit-for-purpose built environment.

“Local sporting clubs will be able to enjoy the upgraded amenities of the McGregor Street clubrooms, supporting the growth and development of junior and experienced players on the field.

“The works are being completed at a time when WA begins to ease back into normality, with team sports and training once again permitted.

“I’d like to thank the Hedland Junior Soccer Association for working with the Town, providing insights on how the targeted upgrades can best serve the local community.

“Community consultation over the last few years has uncovered a preference for the Town to invest resources into upgrading existing infrastructure assets, such as these clubrooms.”

Hedland Junior Soccer Association President Rohan Brittain said the upgrades would contribute to the Association’s ability to attract, retain and foster the wellbeing and talent of players.

“I’d like to thank the Town of Port Hedland for committing to these upgrades, which will help us in making the most of easing restrictions in the months ahead and getting people involved in sports again.

“We have over 200 registered members and many volunteers who contribute to the success of our Association. The new facility will not only serve us in regards to catering and storage, but it will also enable us to gather and create a sense of camaraderie across the club”.
