Two motions put forward by the Town of Port Hedland at the Australian Local Government Association’s (ALGA) 2019 National General Assembly (NGA), held from 16-19 June in Canberra, have passed.
The primary purpose of the NGA, now in its 25th year, is for stakeholders in the local government sector to work collaboratively to influence the policy direction taken by the recently re-elected Morrison Government.
The Town’s motions advocate for more policies to support population growth, investment and job creation in regional areas, as well as policies to manage anti-social behaviour and strategies to counter the impacts of illicit substance abuse.
Following passage, these motions will now be referred to the ALGA board for consideration when determining future policy initiatives pursued by relevant Federal Departments.
Mayor Camilo Blanco said it was important for regional local governments to take an active voice in Federal Government policy making.
“Our region is the economic engine maker of the nation, home to the world’s largest bulk exporting port and driving the iron export trade to China.
“However, we face significant challenges when it comes to population retention, training, employment opportunities for locals and anti-social behaviour.
“Like many regional towns across the country, we face unique geographic and social challenges which require a national approach to successfully address.
“This year’s NGA theme was Future Focused, positioning delegates to understand the challenges faced by regional councils in the years ahead and help craft workable solutions.
“Local stakeholders have been involved in community safety forums and job creation initiatives for many years, which have made a significant difference to the lives of locals.
“I’m hopeful the recently re-elected Federal Government appreciates both the imperative of following motion passages with practical policies, as well as the spirit of supporting the regional backbone of our nation.”
