Work at the Spoilbank is on track to commence in 2020, following the endorsement of the Marina and Waterfront masterplan at yesterday's Council Meeting.
The masterplan - which will guide the development of recreational spaces, infrastructure and amenities at the Spoilbank site - was developed following extensive consultation with various stakeholders and the Hedland community.
In November the community was invited to look at the draft masterplan and provide comment at an open day. Those comments have been considered and as a result extra parking has been integrated into the latest version of the masterplan.
The Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling said once completed, the Spoilbank project would transform Port Hedland.
“In addition to the obvious benefits to the boating and fishing community, the opportunities in retail, hospitality and tourism will also be immense once the project starts to take shape.
“It has been a fantastic collaborative effort between the Town, the State Government and the Spoilbank Community Reference Group to get to this point.
“This is a priority project for the community and I am encouraged to see it’s progressing quickly.”
Some of the highlights of Stage 1 works include:
- A marina waterbody and associated infrastructure with long-term capacity for up to 80 boat pens
- A four-lane boat ramp
- Up to 200 trailer parking bays and additional provision for general car parking
- Dry dock area for commercial vessels
- Publicly accessible breakwaters and a jetty platform
- Recreation and event spaces
- Public waterfront promenade
- Provision for temporary ‘pop-ups’ accommodating food and beverage outlets
- Shared clubs opportunity
