Make your creative mark on the JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub

Published on Monday, 30 November 2020 at 1:37:18 PM

Hedland based creatives are invited to submit a concept design for future perforated metal shade structures at the JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub (JDHYCH) site. The chosen design will be translated into dot formation and fabricated onto six trapezoid shaped shade structures, adjacent to the site’s eventual stage 2 multi-use sports courts.

The initiative is part of the Town’s commitment to spend at least two percent of infrastructure project costs on public art, as well as to empower locals to contribute to the creative scene.

The structures will serve the dual function of celebrating local art and providing users of the site with better sun safety.

The time frame for submitting a concept design closes at 12pm on Monday, 4 January 2021. All artists will be notified of the chosen design by Friday 8 January 2021.

Mayor Peter Carter encouraged local creatives to take the opportunity to submit a design which told a unique story.

“We want a local creative to make their mark on future metal shade structures at the JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub site, which has recently undergone $7 million worth of works and is set for significant exterior upgrades soon.

“We are looking for a concept design which is monochromatic, clear, meaningful and original. As uncovered in community consultation, people value public art which is impactful and communicates a powerful message.

“Incorporating artistic design into the site’s structure infuses local storytelling into our built environment, a priority shared by the community and the Town’s leadership.

“Once a concept design has been chosen, the artist will be paid for their work and the process will start to turn the concept into a detailed design. This will then enable a metal fabricator to complete the works on the shade structures.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for an artist to have their work featured on a multi-million dollar public infrastructure development, so I encourage people to make a submission by the closing date.”
