The Town of Port Hedland Libraries have secured $8,000.00 as part of the State Government’s Better Beginnings Family Literacy Community Grants Program, to create an outdoor library classroom celebrating Indigenous Literacy Day on Wednesday 7 September.
The Libraries staff will provide an opportunity for children to participate in activities including Aboriginal storytime, arts and crafts, musical instruments and sensory activities in a comfortable outdoor environment.
Library staff will work with the Town’s Aboriginal Engagement Officer to reach out to language groups, Aboriginal Corporations and remote communities to maximise the classroom’s reach throughout Hedland.
The classroom supports the Town’s Library Strategy 2021-2025, including that libraries offer services which reflect the characteristics of the diverse communities they serve.
Mayor Peter Carter welcomed the Town’s successful grant application.
“The Better Beginning Family Literacy Community Grants Program will enable the Town to create an outdoor library classroom celebrating Indigenous Literacy Day this September.
“The outdoor classroom is about bringing engaging activities to more people, who may not be patrons to our regular story time and rhyme time sessions.
“The key aim of the Better Beginning Program is to support the development of literacy in children from birth; providing them with greater potential to grow, learn and develop, perform well at school and succeed later in life.
“We’re committed to fostering opportunities to improve access to literacy in the community, recognising the need to reach remote communities and celebrate the cultures of traditional owners.”
The Town will provide updates about the outdoor classroom in the months ahead.
