Lest We Forget this ANZAC Day

Published on Wednesday, 14 April 2021 at 10:43:24 AM

The Hedland community is invited to attend the Port Hedland ANZAC Day Dawn Service from 5:00am at the War Memorial on Sunday 25 April, located at the corner of Anderson Street and The Esplanade.

Residents are asked to please be present at the earlier time due to Covid-19 check in requirements, in line with state government restrictions.

Earlier this year, RSL WA announced that traditional in-person services could recommence in 2021. Last year, ANZAC Day ceremonies were cancelled across the country due to the unfolding Covid-19 pandemic.

The service is coordinated by the RSL Port Hedland sub branch, supported by the Town of Port Hedland and media supporter The North West Telegraph.

The Dawn Service will commence at 5:00am and will run for approximately two hours.

The Service will be followed by a Gunfire Breakfast at the Pilbara Regiment in Wilson Street, Port Hedland.

Residents who would prefer to avoid large gatherings are invited to participate in the Driveway Dawn Service, by standing at a driveway, balcony or patio and tuning in to the radio or Facebook for one minute’s silence at 6:00am. This will be followed by The Ode and The Last Post.

Mayor Peter Carter encouraged locals to attend the Dawn service, particularly in light of last year’s cancellation.

“ANZAC Day is a time for the community to come together and commemorate all those who have served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

“I’d like to thank the RSL Port Hedland sub branch for coordinating this year’s event, giving local residents the opportunity to gather and commemorate the ANZAC spirit.

“Due to WA keeping Covid-19 at bay, we are thrilled to see the return of an in-person ANZAC Day event. However, last year’s successful Driveway Dawn Service will still be going ahead for those who wish to avoid large gatherings.”
