Landfill establishment reserve secures the future of waste management

Published on Friday, 4 June 2021 at 12:50:14 PM

Council has approved the establishment of a Landfill Establishment Reserve account for funding and managing the long term succession planning of the existing landfill facility on North Circular Road, South Hedland.

The existing facility has a remaining life span of approximately 11 years, necessitating the Town to eventually close down and rehabilitate the existing facility in conjunction with designing, developing and constructing both a transfer station on the current site and a new facility on a suitable site.

The Reserve will ensure the Town has access to adequate financial resources while undertaking this process. The Town’s Strategic Community Plan 2018-2028 compels the Town to implement sound, long-term financial planning.

Council also adopted the amended Policy 2/019 Financial Reserves to facilitate the Reserve’s establishment.

Mayor Peter Carter welcomed Council’s decision to approve the establishment of the Reserve.

“I’m pleased Council decided to approve the establishment of the Landfill Establishment Reserve, providing the Town with financial security while undertaking long-term succession planning for South Hedland Landfill.

“The South Hedland Landfill is a core pillar of the Town’s waste management service, providing residents and businesses with an accessible location to properly dispose of waste, as well as facilitating kerbside collection and recycling.

“Council and I are committed to long term financial planning, which provides for the community’s future needs, taking into consideration the critical growth factors of today.

“With projected population increases, economic diversification driving commercial waste needs and an existing facility approaching its end of life, the time is now right to plan for a future landfill site which serves our community and builds on the Town’s recent sustainability improvements.”
