Kerbside Recycling Coming to Hedland

Published on Friday, 25 October 2019 at 8:21:42 AM

Council has awarded tenders for the provision of a kerbside recycling service in Hedland, delivering on strong community support for recycling.

The waste services tenders cover kerbside collection of waste and recycling and processing of recycling.

Cleanaway was the preferred tenderer and SUEZ was the second preferred tenderer, with a ten-year projected contract value of $18,869,841.00. The contract term is seven years with an optional extension of three years.

The inclusion of recycling in waste services aligns with the 2018 Town of Port Hedland Waste Strategy, which strives towards more sustainable waste practices.

Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebeling said the provision of kerbside recycling was a significant milestone for Hedland.

“For years, residents and stakeholders have expressed a real passion for kerbside recycling. I’m proud the Town is now delivering and meeting community expectation.

“Recycling is a core component of waste services in a majority of Australian Councils, with local government at the forefront of creating sustainable communities.

“During our strategic community plan consultation process, we uncovered a 93% local desire for kerbside recycling.

“The contract also covers recycling processing, a service the Town values due to instances elsewhere of recycled material ending up in a landfill.

“The Town will provide the community with timely updates on the rollout of kerbside recycling in due course.” The commencement of the service is yet to be confirmed, projected to be mid-2020.
