A new initiative spearheaded by the Hedland Safety Advisory Committee to reduce rates of student truancy will begin tomorrow across the town.
Members of the WA Police force and the Department of Communities will collect roaming children who are not attending school, followed by seeking absentee information and calling guardians for an explanation.
The Hedland Safety Advisory Committee was established in December 2017 and comprises of representatives from the State and Federal Government, as well as the community sector, working collectively to address community wellbeing.
Mayor Camilo Blanco welcomed the initiative as a pragmatic approach to reducing truancy rates.
“Thanks to funding from BHP and multi-agency cooperation, we are taking the issue of truancy seriously and tackling it head on.
“On average, there has been an increase in school attendance in the Pilbara of 1.6% over the last ten years, however a slight decline was recorded in 2018.
“It’s not about being heavy handed, it’s more about making families understand the crucial role schooling plays in shaping kids’ futures.
“Further, we will continue to liaise with local businesses on the importance of not serving school aged children during school times.
“I’d like to acknowledge the work of all members of the committee for helping to improve the future of our young people.”
