JD Hardie Youth Zone refurbishment works set to reshape facility

Published on Friday, 29 May 2020 at 8:38:46 AM

HVAC replacement, roof replacement and interior refurbishment work at the JD Hardie Youth Zone have been approved, progressing the delivery of the site masterplan which was adopted in July 2019.

The works will be undertaken in four phases which will be completed concurrently to ensure completion before the 2020/21 cyclone season, due to the site’s function as a shelter during cyclonic weather events.

Extensive consultation efforts, particularly for the Town’s Strategic Community Plan, found a desire to invest in the long term viability of the facility.

Commissioner Fred Riebeling AM JP said the works were a crucial step in moving the masterplan into the construction phase.

“I’m pleased works are set to commence for HVAC and roof replacement and interior refurbishment works at the JD Hardie Youth Zone. We’re committed to the site being a central hub of community activation for current and future generations to enjoy.

“I’d like to emphasise that modification works are in line with the Town’s Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2017-2022 so that people of all abilities can access the facility once it reopens.

“The JD Hardie Youth Zone masterplan is part of a suite of masterplans, including the South Hedland Integrated Sports Complex and McGregor Street Sports Precinct, which will provide a high standard of sport and recreation amenity for the future.

“While the works are happening, the Town is committed to ensuring JD Hardie Youth Zone programming is still activated across other Town facilities.

“Kids club sessions will be free of charge for Term 3 and will be held at Colin Matheson Oval Pavilion, Marquee Park and the Kevin Scott Oval Playground. BoxFit and SLAM will be held at Wanangkura Stadium, with possible additional programming at South and Port Hedland skate parks. All of these activities will be conducted within COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines. Please keep an eye out on the Town’s website and Facebook page for programming updates.”
