The adoption of the JD Hardie Youth Zone (JDHYZ) Site Masterplan secures the renewal of this crucial community asset, paving the way for the commencement of the detailed design stage.
The Masterplan was informed by extensive community consultation efforts, identifying an immediate need for child care facilities and the provision of more open space.
Donovan Payne Architects were commissioned to complete the masterplan for the JDHYZ, with A Balanced View Leisure Consultants (ABV) and the Town conducting the community consultation component.
Since its inception in the 1970s and subsequent $9.55 million redevelopment in 2010, the JDHYZ has served as Hedland’s primary welfare centre and youth services precinct.
The Hon. Commissioner Fred Riebling said the adoption of the masterplan gave Town Officers and stakeholders certainty moving forward.
“I’d like to thank Town Officers, contractors and members of the community for contributing to a masterplan grounded in a desire to serve the needs of everyday users.
“We have a unique opportunity to evolve the JDHYZ’s capability, extending its scope to potentially incorporate child care and library services for future families to enjoy.
“Our Strategic Community Plan uncovered a local enthusiasm to ensure the JDHYZ remains a central hub of activity and support in the years ahead.
“Community groups have always made the JDHYZ a dynamic space, making the most of its amenities and contributing to Hedland’s social fabric.
“The Facility also serves as an important haven during times of extreme weather events, sheltering people from the impacts of tropical cyclones.
“Crucially, its core community engagement operations provide a safe space and friendly ear for marginalised young people in South Hedland.
“I look forward to seeing the detailed designs in the near future, and look forward to updating the community on any developments prior to their commencement.”
